Become a Desperado

Cowboy Action Shooting is, if you’ll pardon the pun, “A blast!” It’s a great individual competition sport and also a great family sport. Becoming a member of the “Dixie Desperados” is simple. Just fill out the enclosed application and pay the club yearly dues of $24.00 and mail it to the address on the form. Or, just come on out to the twice-monthly club “shoots” and complete the form and dues payment there. The club shoots on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. If you don’t have all the necessary guns and wardrobe, don’t let that stop you as we'll be glad to help you along and teach you the sport. We all started as “greenies” and just went with the flow and had a great time doing so. The two basic rules are to be safe and to have fun. Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) is a celebration of the “old west.” It is a multi-faceted shooting competition using firearms typical of those used in the taming of the old west – from about 1865 to 1899. The competition courses of fire use single action revolvers, lever action or pump action rifles, and shotguns of a pre-1900 design, which include “side-by-side” shotguns, with or without external hammers, or the Model 1897 Winchester pump action shotgun. In CAS (cowboy action shooting), we shoot at steel targets using lead bullets or shot. It’s a scenario-based speed competition, and each scenario has an old west flavor to it. A unique aspect of Cowboy Action Shooting is that each competitor adopts an “alias” – selects a unique name and persona that represents the Old West to them. Since we’re representing the Old West and the “Cowboy Way,” shooters are required to dress in an “old west” manner. Costuming can be as simple as an old pair of jeans, a banded collar shirt, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat (not a baseball cap). Your costume can be as simple or as elaborate and authentic as you desire. The use of specific “old West” firearms and scenarios, and adopting a persona and costume, come together to form what SASS members call “The Spirit of the Game.” The Spirit of the Games means that each competitor fully engages in what the competition asks; you do your best to dress the part, to use the correct competition firearms, and respect the traditions of the Old West and the Cowboy Code. Come shoot with us! You’ll be glad you did! Please enclose a check for $24.00 payable to The Dixie Desperados and mail to: THE DIXIE DESPERADOS c/o Navajo Kelly 391 South 660 East Circle St. George, Utah 84770
